A long time ago, the seas of Singapura (Singapore) was inhabited by many dangerous garfish that attacked the fishermen and the people living near the sea. The king Paduka Sri Mahaking tried several methods to solve this problem, but to no avail. The prime minister , Gulam was also not able to solve the problem.

A clever little boy saw what was happening and suggested the king to make a trap for the swordfish along the beach with soft banana tree trunks. So, the king sent his soldiers to cut down all the banana trees nearby and built a barrier along the beach. When it was high tide again, the swordfish swam up to the beach. However, instead of attacking villagers, the swordfish found their sharp noses stuck onto the banana tree trunks!

The little boys plan had succeeded and the grateful villagers thanked the boy for saving their lives. The jealous Gulam grew worried that the boy might grow up and become the prime minister. So he plotted to kill the boy.

He instigated the king that the boy is gaining popularity and one day he might take over the throne. The king listened and instructed Gulam to kill him.

One night, Gulam and his soldiers went to murder the boy who lived on top of a hill. After killing they found that the boy is bleeding more than usual. Gulam and the soldiers ran away quickly. The whole hill was covered with blood.

The blood eventually caused the soil to turn red and the hill became todays Bukit Merah or Red Hill.
